What is going on this October? Well, we can start off with Wednesday, 13 October 2021. This is the 246th Birthday of the United States Navy which was created in 1775. We have a lot of Navy veterans in VFW Post 2933. Just to name a few: Shorty Barnett, our Post 2933 Former Commander, was a sailor aboard the USS Repurtis, DD-851. He sailed the waters off Vietnam and he cooked up some pretty good meals I understand. Trustee Lenny Jasinski, loaded bombs, rockets, and ammo onto Navy fighters on an aircraft carrier in the waters of the South China Sea. Member Tom Micek was a Navy SEABEE and made two tours to Vietnam. Fairly new members, Rick Hagy and Wade Raiborn were Old Salts, as were others in VFW Post 2933. Happy Birthday U.S. Navy. Keep those ships sailing!

We do have a couple of important events to remember. 9 October is the Start of “Operation Enduring Freedom” in Afghanistan, 2001. 20 years ago. We now know how this all ends, but to all those service members who served in Afghanistan, we are very proud of your service to our country. We are thankful for those brave men and women who gave their lives and sacrificed to help others.

On 18 October, we recognize the “Women in Military Service.” Today women make up about 16% of all enlisted members and 19% of the officer corps. We have several women veterans in our Post and we are proud of them and their service. We are very proud to have them as members of our VFW Post 2933.

October is usually a very nice month weather-wise. The temperatures are getting a little cooler and there are lots of events going on around the area. Get out with your families and visit some to the great local restaurants and businesses. Enjoy the Fall weather. Go to a local DS Football game if you can. The Tigers are off to a good start. And thank you very much for being a member of VFW Post 2933. We are almost there with the building of our new meeting hall. It is looking good! You will be proud of it, I promise. It has been a long wait, especially for those of us who started the post in 1994!!!
